Wonder Woman (2017)

I am “Wonder Woman” hear me roar… and also help those who cannot help themselves!!!

Wonder Woman

Warner Bros. Pictures in association with DC Films, Atlas Entertainment, Cruel and Unusual Films, Tencent Pictures and Wanda Pictures present…

One of the most anticipated films for 2017 which also jump-started the summer blockbusters! Wonder Woman was in a precipice of either literally taking off the DC Extended Universe or letting it drag the company’s reputation further down together with its predecessors “Man of Steel”, “Suicide Squad” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”. Since 2013, all these films have amassed above average earnings in the box-office but were all deemed failures in terms of their “delivery”!

In retrospect, the meant universe of these superheroes has been shouldered by Zack Snyder (300) after bequeathed by Warner Bros. blessing he took it upon himself to bring these icons into their respective pedestals and champion them for the movie viewing public. But unfortunately his vision didn’t seem to be on par with the fans albeit its revenue, it still fell short in the eyes and hearts of everyone…who cared!

Wonder Woman debuted in the comic books in All Star Comics No. 8 on October 1941 whereas her alter-ego Diana Prince had a slightly different origin backing her story since January 1942 from Sensation Comics No. 1. From the multi-faceted progenitor William Moulton Marston, a man of many talents being a psychologist, inventor, self-help author and a comic book writer – he had many ways to share his gifts and one of these are being a polygamist. The story tells of a husband and lover to two women, Elizabeth Holloway Marston his wife and college student turned assistant and live in partner Olive Byrne. While uncredited, artist Harry George Peter was also considered as her co-creator, they all have given attributes and flaws that make the “Princess of Themyscira” a well-loved phenomenon especially to women around the globe.

Moving forward, the Academy Award Winner Patty Jenkins (Monster) was brought in to help turn things around and made the best of what she can gather, amalgamating the history of the Amazon Demigoddess from William her creator, George Perez’s formative years with the character in the 1980’s, aspects from the New 52 reboot and even drawing inspiration from Richard Donner’s very own Superman.

Together with Geoff Johns DC Extended Universe and Films incumbent Chief Creative Officer which he oversees the actual framework in order to get their flagship up and running and for these superheroes to breathe life on the big screen. Formulating the screenplay with Zack is Jason Fuchs (Pan) and Allan Heinberg (Gilmore Girls) they were able to finally convince Warner Bros. and DC to make this film materialize from the get-go!

After auditioning Olga Kurylenko, Ѐlodie Yung and Gal Gadot (Triple 9) they have chosen the latter to be their “long legged” wonder (as preferred by the Director). Upon release of her casting many critics defied her looks to add was her ability to act. Nevertheless, many believed that Gal will do “justice” to the given character and so far proven her detractors on the uptake that they were wrong. She was able to convince most people that a female led superhero gig is worth watching with the same edge of your seat entertainment, action, romance, plot, CGI effects and dialogue…

It was surreal that they were able to get Connie Nielsen (Gladiator) and Robin Wright (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) as mentors for the young Gal’s character. Both have very strong reputation in terms of interpreting their roles even to their previous ones. Nicole Kidman was one of the few to be offered Hyppolyta the Queen of the Amazons but it was all the same to Connie for making the character as tangible as a mother to her child and being a symbol of freedom and lead her people out of prejudice. Her General and sister Antiope was regarded as the “greatest warrior of all time” part as a villain in canon and now as Aunt and trainer for Diana believing in her abilities and her passion to help those in need has made her susceptible for her niece’s safety…

What is a film without antagonists? Even love stories and comedies have a bedevilled cast member may it be disturbing stalkers to high profiled power mongerers. Enter Danny Huston (30 Days of Night) plus her sidekick Elena Anaya (In the Land of Women) they portray General Erich Lunderdorff and Isabel Maru aka Doctor Poison respectively. Winning the war is one thing but killing as many people as you could without regard for humanity is another issue altogether. Danny has become a household name for his villainous roles inclusive of these are: vampire leader Marlow from “30 Days of Night”; embittered and angry soldier Col. William Stryker from “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”; paramour and self-sustaining British High Commissioner Sandy Woodrow from “The Constant Gardener” to name a few.

His endeavor to make war does not conform eventually with his character’s standpoint however it does emanate from each and every one of us that that we are all capable of chaos and destruction. He has limitations and this is where he gains Isabel’s wrought deformity both inside and out. She compliments him with the eagerness to push through with humanity’s extermination so that they can rule of whatever is left to torment.

But David Thewlis (Anonymous) is a different kind of monster; he’s a real piece of work! He is Ares the “God of War”, son of Zeus and brother to Diana. Between the lines of propagating a “black propaganda” making the armistice fish bait for all involved countries, this is where he likes to ploy his plans whispering and influencing mankind to feel weak of being used so that he can consume all their hate and suffering…guten appetit!

I have to admit getting Chris Pine (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit) to portray Steve Trevor was right off the bat! Everyone was speculating him for play Barry Allen “The Flash” or Hal Jordan “Green Lantern” but still contented. He is an American pilot and a spy being allied to the British government! Steve does the job but maybe through writing or on how he resonate as Steve in the big picture gives the “boyfriend” of sorts the witty bantering, comedic retort and the sober soldier who needs to fulfill his duties.

Speaking of which, this is where the gang comes in Sameer played by Saïd Taghmaoui (Vantage Point), a French Moroccan field agent; Eugene Brave Rock (The Revenant) as Chief Napi belonging to the Blackfoot Native American tribe and the “sharp shooting” drunkard Charlie portrayed by Ewen Bremner (16 Years of Alcohol).

With all due respect to the actors especially the first and the latter, this has been one of the most boring and pathetic supporting casts. I really don’t know if it’s the way they were written since there is much incoherence on how they act the part as soldiers. For one they lack resources, a sniper who does not shoot anyone, the supposed “Black Hawk” pilot has become known for his flamboyant stories and flirting with women and lastly, when someone told the Director to have “more creative control” it was either she has not researched enough for the demi-god “Apache” who can be given reference to one of the members of the “Superfriends” aka 1980’s Justice League or he helps fight and save the world by just leading the way to enemy territory, absolutely ridiculous considering that it can be understandable that Wonder Woman will save the day well at least 95 percent of it. The rest are for the boys to work on.

It was fascinating at best, Gal’s breakout role came through and her acting has improved enough to see her genuine kindness, naïve and gullible at the same time. But also with a heart that is destined to bring peace and order no matter the costs. While Patty made another “monster” hit in her own beautiful way!

Batman: Bad Blood (2016)

The film invigorates the surrogates of the bat searching for answers but finds them more in a quagmire!

Batman - Bad BloodWarner Bros. Animation in association with DC Entertainment and Warner Home Video present…

The sequel to the direct to video DC animated film “Batman vs Robin”, Bad Blood takes centre stage when a group of criminals are being confronted head on by the Batwoman voiced by Yvonne Strahovski (I, Frankenstein) she is Katherine Kane, headstrong, uses guns and has a personal void to fill when it comes to her connection with the big Bat!

The loner heroine was first introduced as Katy Kane in Detective Comics No. 233 on July 1956. She was created by Sheldon Moldoff and Edmond Hamilton. The purpose of her birth was a bit in controversy since at the time Bruce was questioned about his sexuality due to an earlier book titled “Seduction of the Innocent” on 1954, she was brought in to be his love affair of sorts. Later on, she was re-introduced as Kate Kane in 52 No. 7 on June 2006 re-introduced by co-creators Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, Greg Rucka, Mark Waid and Ken Lashley where she was given a more definite role as Gotham’s protector since Batman was declared missing. Also, in this version, she is now a Jewish by descent and a lesbian in order to connect better with the public’s interest most especially with the LGBT community!

Directed by Jay Oliva (Son of Batman), the film tries to tackle so many angles all at once with Batman in AWOL, with Richard Grayson also known as Nightwing portrayed by Sean Maher (Best Friends Forever) not eagerly coming back to take on the mantle until they could find out what really happened with their surrogate father! While the real son Damien Wayne the current Robin also returning from the two prequels Stuart Allan (Rise of the Guardians) leaves his isolated training in the mountains to help look for answers (and still being a moody prick).

This is where Jay holds the fort of handling another set of films that was actually based “still from the comic books, they were able to tell these stories from another perspective plus providing some of the best used art of combat and fight scenes but having these grounds of making it to the “next level” is a bit ambitious so to speak since its definitive to make the film exciting to watch but not interesting enough in terms of the plot, character development and cohesiveness of the stories involved!

Like Jason O’Mara (High Stakes) is billionaire “bucket list” Bruce Wayne, the Batman who was gone for the most part of the film and coming back having his mind shattered and controlled by the same woman who left him their child for guidance, enter Morena Baccarin (Deadpool) is Talia al Ghul who suddenly has a change of heart. You don’t even realize when was the turning point of Talia being the lead villain while mitigating her actions to her subordinates and to the man with “mommy issues” codenamed Heretic voiced by Travis Willingham (Mass Effect: Paragon Lost).

Then there was the “Spielberg Formula” wherein cases of parent to children situations were given light to explore better their relationships since they all have been yearning for something:

Moving on with trauma was her breaking point, a memory of being rescued by her dad Col. Jacob Kane voiced by Geoffey Pierson (Unhappily Ever After) from a kidnapping more so seeing her mother and sister died in the hands of terrorists, Kathy led a life of misery and one night changed her, with full resolve she picks herself up and began being a vigilante! She even has personal issues with her gender, knowing that she is a lesbian currently having a relationship with a police officer; it’s only a good thing that she has her father’s blessing!

Independence and freedom are the main concerns for Luke Fox played by Gaius Charles (Salt) a soldier facing his decisions while trying to convince his father what he is right now has served his life with good intentions while Lucius Fox played by Ernie Hudson (You’re Not You) was given the role for the Wayne Enterprises CEO and President.

Dedication and responsibility could be harsh since trying to grow up from the young upstart Robin then becoming Nightwing, being a sidekick outgrew him and let him changed his paths with Batman. But it did not stop there since he still needs to be part of a bigger clan even if he doesn’t want too anymore. This burden that Richard carries has been his pain and if Bruce could only see better what his “eldest son” has been sacrificing then it won’t hurt that much considering they are more than just partners in crime fighting!

To a further extent, their Butler may not be a superhero of sorts but Alfred Pennyworth played by James Garrett (Titanic) have seen all the boys grow up starting with Bruce and in spite of his stature, he is regarded as the backbone and glue of the family, it’s the same reason why he needs to devote his time determinedly to keep pace with their sanity especially with the latest child Damien having been included in the fold of late!

I like the way they approach the diversity of films making more original ones rather than coming from the comic books and graphic novels. But there is a huge difference in terms of quality and it would seem that these stories are less capable to persuade audiences especially the fan boys to really feel the essence of the Batman as a legend and the dark knight of Gotham City!

Another peeve comes into play where the creators do say they would want originality to be the key point of selling these animated features although it’s a standalone plot of an arc or series but on the contrary it does get plot details from storylines from the books which only shows self-defeating nuances. To add, a weak introduction from the opening credits can speak for itself, how they manage to begin the story and place this title cards give way to mediocrity at best!

On the other hand, the voice actors taken to give life to these characters are well deserved. Retaining these actors for the series arc can help generate familiarity with the Bat family, their allies and the villains which also brings us to this commendation of giving chances to lesser known criminals like Killer Moth, Calculator, Electrocutioner, Tusk, Firefly and Hellhound to have the spotlight!

Although not serving grand purpose of conquering the bat but merely as punching bags of course with a bigger, badder and wiser provocateur pulling the strings for the finale to be much more bitter sweet! Speaking of which, the whole investigating, back stories and fisticuffs have somehow ruined or hindered the world’s governments being mind controlled by the latest technology and voicing Mad Hatter’s genius is Robin Atkin Downes (Prometheus), giving it only a few minutes to show credit for!

In closing I applaud Jay and company for instilling the theme “Bad Blood” for it was everywhere! It was good to see new characters and how they try to develop a film series involving the bat universe. Albeit modest in terms of trying something different for a change it does give promise to what can be expected in future projects from Warner Bros. and DC Comics but I still prefer the great stories having been told by great writers and artists and just could fancy that “Hush”, “For Tomorrow”, “Rann-Thanagarr War”, “The Flash: Rebirth”, “Green Lantern: Rebirth”, “Superman: War of the Supermen”, “Last Son” and “Death of the Family” just on top of my head!

Son of Batman (2014)

When does a family of surrogates and a city of crime were not enough for the Dark Knight? Wait until you get a load of me!

Son of Batman

Warner Bros. Animation in association with DC Entertainment and Warner Home Video present…

The direct to video animated film is the 20th entry to DC Comics and Warner Bros. on-going line of fantastic stories brought forth by their comic based characters. Directed by Ethan Spaulding (Avatar: The Last Airbender) and Story written by James Robinson (Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight), the collaboration brings the adaptation from Writer Grant Morrison and Artist Andy Kubert’s “Batman and Son” in 2006 which collects the series from #655 to #658 (talk about domestic problems).

First off, the film was delivered coming from remarkable tale of family which includes love, lies and deception in which there was no intended plot to be based on from the original except for another think tank that came up with another story to be told. I admire how they brought it in the lime light and I do understand the concept of using marketing as a ploy to lure buyers and the fans alike. But seriously, DC Comics has made this routine since day one and although there were adjustments in the given animated films like “Superman: Doomsday”, “Superman/Batman: Public Enemies” and “Superman/Batman: Apocalypse” at least the actual core of the stories were tangible, cohesive and more importantly gives actual meaning to the source material and work of its writers and artists.

Without a doubt that DC Comics gives Marvel a run for their money in terms of the genre plus the segment of the business but at least make it coherent on how you deliver your sales pitch for the audience especially for the fanboys who really want to see the actual comic book come to life.

While there is so much more to ponder let’s go back to the film and on the first act we see the league of assassins training being watched over by their Master and Mentor together with his daughter and grandson but was attacked by Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke voiced by Thomas Gibson (Raising Waylon) with his own loyal soldiers. The latter has a definite grudge with the former since he was pushed over by a child and that really insulted his ego and therefore kills the man by burning him without any chance of climbing back to his Lazarus Pit!

On the other hand, coming back from “Justice League: War” Jason O’Mara (In Justice) lends his voice once again for the Dark Knight. While working on a case that involves Killer Croc who was stealing drugs from Biotech firms their fisticuffs were abruptly put into a stop by Talia Al Ghul who was voiced by Morena Baccarin (Homeland). I just don’t get it seeing Batman pummelling Croc in the face when in fact he is fighting a mutated human that turned into a reptile more so a crocodile who have very thick skins when he is being thrown over like rag doll outside the window while maneuvering back to the building with a broken rib! But a bit of a rush as you see, she needs the Bat more than ever since she has someone waiting to meet him personally! Enter Damian, Ra’s Al Ghul’s heir to the throne and to one day to lead the League of Assassins! Stuart Allan (Rise of the Guardians) and Giancarlo Esposito (Last Holiday) lend their talent to the grandson and grandfather respectively. Both were very attuned to their characters, distinct, clear and without remorse in terms of delivery!

Jason is from Dublin, Ireland and taking over the reins from Kevin Conroy was a sweet gesture to bequeath the said responsibility of being Batman for more projects to come on the other hand Morena really suits the mother figure for Talia, she has a strong and affirmative delivery on her character. Seeing Batman tackle fatherhood, being a parent and being a superhero does not mean you can get away easy with guiding your children especially if they were raised by thieves, killers, terrorist and would be conquerors! Damian had this coming, he knows that from his own mother’s upbringing there will be another direction into his life and it comes from the better half!

While other things are in question, here is a part of the second act one of which how does a kid with given the right expertise of being a martial artist but (here’s the argument) still weighs about 100 pounds kick someone who is 6’10 and weighs 350 pounds and send him flying into a wall considering that Ubu is the bodyguard of Ra’s who now works for Deathstroke is a master assassin. Not only did that scene made me scratch my head, later on Commissioner Gordon even informed Batman that the guy is lucky enough to breathe after taking a beating from a boy!

The part where Dr. Kirk Langstrom aka Man-Bat gives the film a little precedent to the overall premise seeing that Deathstroke wants to take over the world with the Doctor’s experiment turning humans into full scaled sized bats was unnerving, he was not even contented with his minions being ninjas and all! Kirk was voiced by Xander Berkeley (Taken) and has given the film a ploy to work on by both Batman and his son, stopping the bad guys, rescuing the mom in distress and exact revenge to those who have wronged them! Speaking of sons, least we not forget to mention is Dick from the talent of Sean Maher (Much Ado About Anything) yes my dear friends, Nightwing tags along with the Bat just for the kicks and to babysit. I wish that they can make a decent role for the guy who deserves the kind of respect being given to the real son! (no offense meant Damian).

Uneven plot holes that makes this Batman feature worth taking time considering it has a wider perspective of Bruce’s life outside being a superhero! I actually liked it but I have more preference on “Batman: Under the Red Hood”, “Batman: Assault on Arkham” which is another case in point of selling the title that can be either be derivative to the actual game or better to the Suicide Squad! It has action, family problems, kidnapping, extortion, drugs, great villains (mediocre roles) and the Batman who has the best of both ends having the mom and a kid who can grow up being the best that he can be! By the way Bruce is being a responsible parent knowing kids can’t drive at their given age…well unless he steals it! (go ahead Bats call the Police)

How to train your Dragon (2010)

A boy who wanted to prove his worth and a dragon who gave him the courage to find it!

How to Train Your Dragon

DreamWorks Animation and Pacific Data Images in association with Columbia Pictures present…

From great animated works of “The Prince of Egypt”, “Shrek”, “Kung-Fu Panda” and of course the lovable “Megamind”!

DreamWorks definitely added more levity and changed the game in animated films. They do have a place in our hearts indeed; this company has been providing friendly competition to Disney and Blue Skies Studios in providing well loved stories, family oriented and still gives the right amount of adventure and action to complete its intended purpose!

I’ve never seen an animated film involving these type of themes for a long time. To think, I could only remember a classic tale “The Flight of Dragons”. Directed by Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin Jr. the same tag team that helped made Silver Hawks and of course Thundercats into animated series icons!

The film made me indulge to its magical world filled with powerful Sorcerers, Knights, Kingdoms and of course dragons! The moment that I was watching this CGI feature, I knew I’m going to be in for a treat! Everything is in place, all perfectly made into another of cinema’s masterpiece!

From the Island of Berk where Dragons are common to us as ordinary flies, they have been causing much distraught to the land. Taking away livestock and destroying everything in their path, the Vikings stand their ground to face these troublesome flying reptiles and they don’t have it any other way!

Gerard Butler (300, Law Abiding Citizen) lends his voice to Stoick the Vast, the leader of the Vikings whose headstrong, brutish exterior is given more due for his dedication and leadership for his fellow men. His love for his son has even made complications to both their relationship and their duties for the people.

A tale of a young boy misplaced by his own disposition in life, isolated and left to tend and support the island’s warriors in the blacksmith’s shop. Jay Baruchel (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) breathes life to Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III the main protagonist who still needs to do a lot of soul searching and purpose with his life. Trying to prove that he can be an asset in his Father’s army, he finds ways to make things right but still being ignored even by the townsfolk.

It was either fate or destiny that he was able to slingshot one of the most sought after dragons: the Nightfury who is both the best in stealth and has impeccable aim on targets. His objective was to make his Father proud while being away on a mission and finish his training course.

I loved the way he delivers his character; his voice matches his spirit, a normal boy with great potential and ingenuity. His on and off disappearances from town finds a way to the little dragon’s heart! The dynamic between Hiccup and Toothless is one of a few in films that make the flow of the story work and provide its intended goal.

Supporting casts led my America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), she plays Astrid Hofferson, the supposedly best in the ranks of fresh meat, she is quickly annoyed and frustrated with what Hiccup was able to accomplish to add more insult to injury he even gets the accolades of their friends. Craig Ferguson, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and others gave a well deserved performance as well.

The film packs breathtaking visuals that definitely is palpable to the senses! A story that has both genuine and heartfelt defining moments that melds its taste for adventure and action being rolled into one! Voice cast was terrifically performed and has brought forth each and every character into the spotlight. I always go on how the story is done and the people that has placed their backs into it, even most of them has not been given much projects yet, but they were able to make it happen and provide, instill courage and acceptance so they can inspire and aspire fans and audiences alike!

Directors Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders did an amazing job providing the right pacing and tempo of the story that makes it one of the best animated films to be produced! To add, Chris and Dean also lends their input with Cressida Cowell ‘s book as Screenplay Writers.

Maryann Brandon who edited blockbuster films like “Mission Impossible 3”, “Star Trek” and recently Super 8 all have been collaborated with J.J Abrams which I believe is really someone who can be a force to reckon with. Her sidekick Darren Holmes has made great things in his resume as well including Disney’s “The Lion King”, “Ratatouille” and WB’s “Iron Gian”t; all films have been able to produce big box office ticket sales.

Kathy Altieri of the Animation Department brings her gifts, her involvement with Production Design gave How to Train your Dragon spectacular scenes and images! Previous works is traced through Disney Films and for all the hard work they placed in this film it rose to one of the best grossing animated films.

Now, the town that earlier had pest control problems have actually turned into pets, from dragon slayers to dragon masters! A new adventure awaits new battles to fight and a new friend to fly with as a sequel is in waiting! So keep the skies clear and put your pedal to the metal because it’s a fun filled ride!

The Croods (2013)

An avant garde adventure of caricature cavemen that we can enjoy without taking them too seriously!

The Croods

20th Century Fox in association with DreamWorks Animation present…

Kirk DeMicco (Space Chimps) bumps head with Chris Sanders (How to train your Dragon) to co-write and direct this latest animated feature from DreamWorks! Originally title “Crood Awakening” (not bad with the pun) which was going to be featured by Aardman Animations a company that helped made clay animation films come to life like “Wallace and Gromit” and “Chicken Run”.

Set in the pre-historic times, a family of Neanderthals drastically tries to evade extinction from being stomped by mammoths, stung by giant mosquitoes, being eaten by any carnivorous living organism or being struck by the common cold which becomes overkill when you’re living in the age of pre-decongestant era!

The cast is lead by Nicholas Cage (Knowing) as the over protective father Grug who tries his best to salvage his family even just from their daily routines while his loving wife Catherine Keener (The 40 Year Old Virgin) who seems to step away from the lime light trying just to simply convey motherhood by being more open-minded and just reactive to what’s going on with the brady bunch!

The ever alluring even in this primordial age, Emma Stone (Easy A) is their eldest daughter Eep, the curious and adventurous sibling who brings constant dismay to her father. While the middle child is portrayed by Clark Duke (Kick-Ass) as the brainless Thunk, who gives just another supporting role to compensate and complete the interactivity between the brew. Randy Thom (The Incredibles) an Award Winning Sound Designer who compensates really well the younger daughter Ugga with her underdeveloped speech impediments!

Now, here is something that can be elaborated further! Ryan Reynolds (Safe House) plays fully-aware and inventor genius Guy with his side-kick pal a Sloth who is coincidentally named Belt! His character has the shared screen time to portray the love interest for Eep, to give the second act a bit more leverage and for the premise to move on to make good use of his God given talent. The once sought out comedian actor has been recently in the decline especially with his live action stints which turned for worst when he was casted as ill-fated “Green Lantern”. At least his animation projects are stepping off the bat (Turbo is coming soon) to make things more profitable for his acting career.

The cast was intended to be cohesive as possible but with others with a status quo of being well-known, the spotlight sharing was easily refined to have each character to be unique while others to have more screen time making the story more free flowing especially with Nicholas, Emma and Ryan. The main thing we can discuss here is it was simply a family entertainment, some comedic instances that was purely coincidental with its “well-thought” off script and screenplay. Although it never got out of the box when it comes to presenting an era as they were trying  to incorporate gimmickry in which one example was finding food to eat like “breakfast eggball”! (Ice Age anyone?)

As we can expect from animated film making, there are always ways and means to ante-up the game and although DreamWorks was able to instil a new franchise in the making, competition could never have been better with so much CGI being incorporated in animated and live action films today! To add, with Pixar from Walt Disney Studios, Blue Sky Studios anchors on 20th Century Fox and Illumination Entertainment holds up the globe with Universal Studios. All of these companies have great influence in the market when it comes to providing certified hits in the box-office, although there should still be a need for a game changer that allows more elbow room in the closet (as pertained in my first paragraph).

With all its fan service goofy moments and aesthetically colorful and unique landscapes there is still something about The Croods that makes them successful in the movie going public, they do promote cohesiveness, the love-hate between parent and children dynamic was evident and the will to survive against all odds in spite of the trials a typical family from the pre-historic ages has to go through, The Croods seeks out other adventures as they ride -off into the sunset!

Robin Hood (2010)

“The Hero rose until he became a Legend!”

Robin Hood

Universal Pictures, Imagine Entertainment, Relativity Media in association with Scott Free Productions present…

Truly, a master of epic films! The story revolved on how a man with a vague history became the hero and how his legend began!

Interestingly, the director and crew have given the right ambiance to relive the tale and make it memorable for the audience to see! To add, I can say that it was entertaining fun to watch though less gritty from the other films produced in the past especially comparing it with Kingdom of Heaven. The beginning of the film was quite slow in setting the tone from two countries with a bitter rivalry! Here, it carries on what is happening simultaneously on both France’s battlegrounds and London’s infidelities which sets in motion a bloody conspiracy!

Director Sir Ridley Scott (Gladiator) delivers another sword and sandal film that follows a story of a man who was born to lead and to serve his country despite the oppression from the law! Cinematographer John Mathieson (Hannibal) collaborates with the Director to capture the lore of an anarchic land! He works with clear vision giving awe aspiring shots on both in-land landscapes, fields of green and scenic coasts of England!

Most of the cast made a commendable performance including Mark Strong’s stoic character. Other performers were a stereotyped and dull like Danny Huston (The Constant Gardener) is King Richard “The Lionheart” who I always find not interesting. He is well received by critics but I do perceive his monotonous delivery and facial expressions with any profoundness for neither intensity nor versatility his undoing. He was the “comeback King” so to speak and we can leave it at that! Cate Blanchett (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring) is Lady Marion Loxley, as a strong woman she resembles duty and honor for her husband and inherited land from her Father–in-Law Sir Walter Loxley played by the greatly adulated Max Von Sydow (The Minority Report) who always delivers a wonderful performance! She gave a decent portrayal of a wife torn by her husband’s return home. I just cannot approve her constant annoying and repetitive smirk on men bantering about her capabilities or in her lost marriage. Nonetheless, still a great find for talent to portray the  female lead role, partnering with Russell was a match made in heaven!

I simply find it profound on how Sir Ridley captures very intricate details that gives the film its form to not just tell the story and be entertained but to also to learn from it especially in history. Things like how people from Royalty have this opulent lifestyle which is given and yet when it comes to servitude to his people becomes unrepentantly disgraced! While they have this luxury not by mere wealth alone as basis, with family and having wives to do with becomes a social norm and yet making them untouchable by laws of man!

Another example was with Chancellor William Marshal, a trusted and faithful servant of King Richard, portrayed by William Hurt (The Incredible Hulk) who sees a foreboding treachery that lies within their ranks! They have this saying “keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer!” which covers the overall impact of the premise from the start until the end!

Other points to ponder is the children of Sherwood Forest which gives a good backdrop on how they came to be juvenile delinquents in the first place since London’s men has been fighting in the Crusades for the last ten years which I easily find as a strong foundation giving emphasis and meaning to the whole story, although it was quite ironic when they started as a nuisance for the Loxley estate then turned into a “small force” to reckon with and even served a better purpose as allies with the uprising.

The fight scene at the shores was a bit inadequate and superficial. Which I do consider one of the lowest points of the film, with so little room to move and expand the storyline it was given emphasis merely on a duel of two countries rather than of its significance in the past!  The climactic battle between Robin Longstride portrayed by the indispensible Rusell Crowe (Cinderella Man) shooting the arrow at Godfrey played the consistently repugnant and outstanding at the same time Mark Strong (Sunshine) was the only moment that gave me shivers to my spine. This mole was the first foe to be circumvented before the Sheriff became his mortal enemy! On a side note, why would there be a need for Marion to be in the fight? And more so, the children who rode on smaller horses seemed farfetched considering they will be in a fight with French knights with armor and battle training, it was not necessary and more importantly looks absolutely ridiculous!

It was a wonderful film, not with the same calibre with his other films having the same type of battle scenes and great speeches before the conflict commences but still it got me thinking of the connection with Balian of “Kingdom of Heaven”! In end of the story, it showed that King Richard the Lionheart was going to Jerusalem to bring it back to Christians from the Muslims, then with shame and bankruptcy, he plunders every Kingdom he could set upon before trying to go back to London. These crusades have so much more to teach the populace not just with the Kingdoms involved seeking to conquer other lands or the prove which is the more deserving religion to rule the world but rather it was the men who impose their power and be responsible for their actions…not just to his fellow men but to God as well!

The Guardian (2006)

A story about heroism, sacrifice and knowing when to let go!

The Guardian

Touchstone Pictures in association with Beacon Pictures present…

Directed by Andrew Davis (The Fugitive) who also takes pride on getting the usual talents that he has worked with in his previous films, a very few notable names on his list were Steven Seagal and Tommy Lee Jones. After Hurricane Katrina which destroyed a greater part of New Orleans and left thousands without homes, the production team and the writers utilized key moments of courage and humanitarian efforts to instill in the film’s undertakings. Known for his thriller action oriented films, the Director on this occasion takes a dive with the men and women of the United States Coast Guard!

Legendary Rescue Swimmer Ben Randall played by Kevin Costner (No Way Out), in a not your typical work scenario film where you can find it a bit perplexing that your job description is to save lives and your office cubicle is the whole freaking ocean! Kevin has been around the movie industry long enough to call him a veteran, how he commands stage presence in delivering both acting and at the back of the camera is worth watching. On his part, he may have to deal with issues that make his duties as an Officer more complicated seeing the personal side of his experiences gets the better of him and it gets worse from there…

This trauma and a troubled marriage had brought more complications to his life. Ironic, he saves lives and yet he cannot save his own from his personal concerns. So, Coast Guard Captain William Hadley from the talent of the towering Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption) offered two options is either walk out of here or take the desk job at A Point to school some new Coast Guards and to get back on his feet from all his emotional stress.

There were fishermen who were found floating already and seeing that one was presumed alive, Ben came to the rescue but without sacrifice, a tidal wave hurled a massive container and the helicopter comes crashing down pulling the lone survivor into his deathly grave! Nothing can shake the nerves of this hero of the high seas, until one tragic mission. Wanting to save his partner Carl, they were sent a lifeboat before extraction but was a little too late for his best friend and partner!

Enter hotshot and pain in the ass swimmer Jake Fischer who was portrayed by Ashton Kutcher (The Butterfly Effect) a show off, cocky but hilarious guy but you just want to shut up! He goes into training camp and trying to beat every single record that Ben accomplished. Bar fights, casual dating and tremendous work out from the veteran himself gave him some epiphany in his life. Though, there were few insights that Jake made him king of the hill, he never got point from wasting time. Soon all began to unravel when Ben understood what was bothering him and what tragic accident happened that left Jake wanting attention and some direction in his life.

Ben sees Jake as a potential not just in his class but for the rescue team his going to be assigned to, he can be the best of the best if he wanted to, he just need to understand how important his gift was and what reasons are left uncertain for his survival in the car accident with his friends. That goes without saying how Ben kept him on the team for obvious reasons of having that opportunity to be alive and so others may live!

The premise in general was more of a feel good film noting that it had had well talented actors that inspires to be better in spite of the danger in terms of people to be rescued and of their own lives as well. Production just needs to make sure all is secured especially when it comes to drop-offs from helicopters and for the situation of the water as well are all needed to be taken into consideration. They even made indoor pools just to compensate to make it real enough to be felt by the audience of what it’s like to work under these duress situations! On another aspect, Flash Film Works was hired just to recreate the 3D effects with the supervision of Mark Stasiuk while working in Fusion CI Studios.

The premise was like moments of desperation which comes and goes just like a McDonald meal served for the whole day! It was a story that inspires and shows people to never give up and make the best out of their lives no matter how bad the situation is! To the U.S. Coast Guard, truly the unsung heroes!

The Expendables 2 (2012)

Listen up “men at arms”, on the count to three shoot everything on sight I mean “everything” and ACTION!

the-expendables-2

Universal Pictures, Lionsgate and Nu Image in association with Millennium Films present…

Soldiers one and all! The “heroes for hire” returns to the big screen with more explosions than all three Michael Bay’s Transformers franchise could even muster and that’s just the tip of the iceberg!

Directed by Simon West (The General’s Daughter) he turns this ensemble cast into a more dynamic sequel. I did appreciate this one coming from the first installment since it has a decent mission to follow not just being thrown into some predicament with a woman acting as ploy to find her rescuers from tyrannical rule! Come on, this film’s premise and predicament is in worldwide scale (wow)! His earlier works at least gives a deliberate and provocative stories and that is where he should derail from, work with the script and screenplay and not just rely on star power to save the day!

Legendary action icons Sylvester Stallone (Rambo) is head honcho Barney Ross and Transporter franchise alpha male is Jason Statham (Killer Elite) he portrays Lee Christmas (come on man!) as they team up to rescue a businessman held hostage which became more complicated when Trench a rival and comrade played by Arnold Schwarzenegger (Terminator) from the hands of Nepalese extremists! While lurking in the dark, the man who will always be a cowboy, Yipee-Ki-Yay (well, not here) Bruce Willis (Die Hard) is the enigmatic CIA Operative named Mr. Church, primarily coming from Covert Black Ops or Government funded projects he still calls the shots, imposing he may be while standing next to Sly still gives me goose bumps he does make a decent anti-hero or a bad guy every once in a while!

A 2nd Degree Black Belt in Kyokushin Karate Dolph Lundgren (Red Scorpion) since missing Yin Yang en route in China from a previous mission had his eyes in another minority! Psychotic Gunner Jensen was a Chemical Engineer (just like in real life) before he went nuts with a Dancer in a Disco he used to have worked as a Bouncer! In the film, he reunites with Sly from Rocky IV’s Ivan Drago and with kickboxing ace Van Damme in their Universal Soldier projects as Andrew Scott the renegade GR13. Nothing came out of Dolph in this film (especially with Randy Couture) he just served as the team’s comedian without any use except to reply a line or two when needed!

They say that you have to take the bad with the good and frankly he does not give a damn! The lone gunman Texas Ranger, a 10th Degree Black Belt Shito Ryu Karate (Tae Kwon Do, Jiu Jitsu etc.) and Chun Kuk Do founder Chuck Norris (Missing in Action) as Booker derived from his previous film “Black Tigers” is giving the guys a lot of back up firepower when all the chips are down! He shoots down everyone from the other side of the fence but he in nowhere to be found and yet he walks in the battlefield cool and calm just like that… (what the?)

The not so serious muscle man Terry Crews (The Longest Yard) should be with all honesty got the role for Roadblock in G.I.JOE: Retaliation! He has the comedic wit, firepower and cooking skills even for a Bunsen burner he could make a meal out of it. Hale Caesar is the team’s heavy artillery guy who could blow you away either with his grenade launcher or with his supplementing one liners!

The hand to hand combat expert was replaced by a chick, enter Nan Yu (Speed Racer) as Maggie Chan sent by Church to extract the device that traces the plutonium secluded in a mine which brings us to Kung-Fu and Wushu sensation Jet Li (Once Upon a Time in China) as the hard kicking Yin Yang! He had his moments just to savour his graceful exit knocking out bad guys left and right with frying pans! (Jackie must have been consulted on this…)

While the real brother of the Thunder God (not with the Deer antlers) Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games) is sharp shooting Billy The Kid was given credit for his “rookie” entry in the team seeing that he is the only young soldier on the team it does not mean he can’t knock you out as far as a mile away from nowhere. His entry makes the dialogue more humane though sombre and gratifying as the “soldier boy” of the group his loyalty does give him the respect of his peers!

Finally he’s been called in to join…I mean to be the villain! Jean Claude Van Damme (Bloodsport) the very first film I saw this man throw his famous helicopter kick Kumite style! I’ve watched this guy’s films and it was always an adrenaline rush! “Respect is everything, without it we are just common people, shitty common people” nice one Jean! On the other hand, English Martial Artist Scott Adkins (The Shepherd: Border Patrol) as wing man Hector, he reunites with JCVD for the fourth time! Their tandem makes it edgy and flamboyant not backing down even if push comes to shove!

The 80’s and 90’s is the best era there is in indulging cinema with well rounded performances and  breakthroughs in terms of genres like crime thrillers, martial arts, cops and robbers, AWOL soldiers  and even through sci-fi! Our fathers will always have their James Coburn, Charlton Heston, Marlon Brando, Kirk Douglas, James Dean, Sean Connery Charles Bronson and Clint Eastwood on the other hand the generation of today can have their Taylor Lautner and Channing Tatum (yawn!) I grew up with these films and action stars and they’ve become part of culture, heroes one and all whether they came from different fields, they still found their way into this monumental gathering of mercenaries as friends throughout these years!

Before we get killed, let’s move on! It was built in a $100 million budget and Sly wanted to bring in as much as possible actors that have fallen out of movie offers and it’s a generous way to do in order to help out friends in need. For instance Nicolas Cage and John Travolta was offered, while from the Orient martial arts superstar Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen were taken into consideration but most of them declined due to scheduling conflicts or the part was not enticing enough!

What is a testosterone driven story without the elements of combat, some rough housing, guns and oh, just the fate of world that hangs in a balance amidst an impending nuclear war! I guess it would have been better when the story comes into play which is actually evident here than the first film. There is a wider scope on the premise, still mission centric but with elements that covers the entire story let the viewers just follow the blood and bullet riddled bodies all over the place.

But this was definitely better than the first film with this one having at least an inclination to finish off properly in a sense of stand offs (what’s new?) which is actually clichéd given it’s appropriate fan service running after the villains and picking a fight to know who’s better or who will survive coming out from hanging chains or a rotating blade of a helicopter! The dialogue is mediocre as usual and needs a lot of work especially coming from guys like Sly, Arnold and Jet Li who was actually replaced with a lady (just for eye candy) to add insult to injury.

All the banters from the legendary action stars made it cheesy already entertaining but sometimes silly where lines just come out as adlibs just to incite previous films or works that just needs to make the male populace reminisce the days, the old days if you catch my drift! In terms of violence, there were a lot of blood spilled from punctured human beings coming from incoming ballistics as if they were there for target practice shooting only, knives thrown or stabbed wherever you like, burnt corpses from a cannon equipped seaplane which makes sense since they are just “cannon” fodder! (I made a funny).

Well, nobody leaves without a kiss from JVCD’s foot, pun intended! He made sure of that since Sly got his Rocky thing rolling against “The Villain” who is actually the name of his character!!! Maybe they had so much time to have fun shooting people that they forgot they’re making a film which includes decent screen names for starters! There were plenty of time to make the script but seriously Sly should have changed the names Barney, Christmas, Yin Yang, Toll Road, Hale Caesar and lastly, Jean Vilain, it “may” have been codenames but it wouldn’t hurt giving well thought off ones?

Pure adrenaline “mindless” action the way it was not meant to be…unfortunately, all were expendable to each and every last one of them!

The Expendables (2010)

So full of adrenaline pumped action that it gave no meaning on who or what these guys are shooting at!!!

the-expendables

Lionsgate and Nu Image in association with Millennium Films present…

The film in a general perspective is nicely done, although the plot was a bit easy to play with. But important thing was, Sylvester Stallone assembled a cast that is truly daring, applaudable and amazing! (on a one sided note)

The soldiers turned mercenaries alone was impressive to look at but there are hinges from the script from which Stallone visualized that makes it lack depth of story and intention. The story he co-wrote was about mercenaries who does Black-Ops when their country can’t or won’t do anything about these specific missions.

In retrospect, Stallone has made very convincing and iconic portrayals in his Rocky and Rambo films. He knows his field very well and explores more on how he can improve and make stories that are worth seeing!

So it begins…

Somalia, a boat was captured by pirates and demands $5 M for the hostages, Ross (Sly Stallone) with his team has given $3 M to free them, but Jensen (Dolph Lundgren) just got a little bit trigger happy!

Then people started to become smear on the wall! Restrained, Jensen was ordered by Ross to leave the team for being loose cannon and for his psychological instability.

This was the part the audience applauded the trio. Enter CIA Agent Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) and Trench (Arnold Schwarzenegger), together they were discussing on whom was going to take the mission, a little verbal exchange with Ross and Trench since they were rivals from past missions, with everything said Ross got the deal from Mr. Church, but not without a warning!

Ross together with Lee (Jason Statham), did a reconnaissance in Vilena as World Wildlife Conservatory agents. They met a freedom fighter woman which made it more difficult for them since it was the Dictator General Garza’s daughter. Trying to save her, she willfully stayed instead to fight for her country. They left with a lot of casualties and Ross is now feeling the guilt of leaving the woman behind. He wanted to come back alone but not without company.

As action heroes, fighting is in their forte already, I was expecting that there would be a showdown with either Yin (Jet LI) or Lee with The Brit (Gary Daniels) who was one of the best kick boxers of his time but unfortunately he was tag teamed and got kicked in the ass! (in the head as well). While taking down soldiers with Toll (Randy Couture), Ross was wrestling with Dan Paine (Steve Austin) on the other side. Now, here comes their weapon specialist Hale Caesar (Terry Crews) with his tank of a gun, who blows up everyone and everything in its path. Running for his life together with the daughter ex-CIA James Monroe (Eric Roberts) was gunned down and knifed by both Ross and Lee at the end.

Going back to LA, Tools (Mickey Rourke) is having a knife throwing contest with Lee, while Yin and Jensen having reconciled regarding their past arguments (and some!)

Well, that’s all about it some parts were awesome at the same time other sequences were dull and lacks delivery. Audiences pre-dominantly for the male went for the gut wrenching, testosterone level of action moreover with the names involved and was gathered has been set as a must see for a long time! Stallone could have been great with this, he actually directed and wrote his “Rambo IV” film and it did great in the box office. Maybe there was too much talent around that he was all over the place thinking everyone will be given justified roles in an equal, no holds barred manner.

Many got curious on how the film and cast was planned out; actually giving emphasis on more action heroes that should have been added into the line up. Now here they are:

  1. Steven Seagal – was offered but had past issues with the film producer.
  1. Jean Claude Van Damme – was offered but didn’t see any importance to his role.
  1. Wesley Snipes – was offered the role for Hale Caesar, but declined, he has his own reasons for not joining the bandwagon.
  1. Kurt Russell – should be doing the part of Mr. Church but later was offered to Bruce Willis (which many would agree to be the better of the two).

People can have mixed reviews for this film, but I understand how Sly was able to bring this together, his work ethic is over the top! And with the casts reputation and camaraderie these past 30 years, all was done abruptly but with a least a decent impression! It was a simple story but very entertaining indeed, with all the characters having a good time and having that respect for each other. I do hope the sequel can be a little more comprehensive and a plot that really works and would sell for the demographics involved. Still, worth the wait and I believe Sly will redeem himself on the next run…

It’s all in a day’s work for the Expendables!

The A-Team (2010)

20th Century Fox in association with Dune Entertainment, Top Cow Productions, Big Screen Productions, Stephen J. Cannell Productions, Ingenious Film Partners, Phoenix Film Partners and Scott Free Productions present…

the-a-team

As part of my military movie marathon, I found this story penchant in the field of soldier tactics, gallantry and hardware!!! Filled with action, thrills and comedy that makes it worth watching all over again!

Now, the film was based in an 80’s TV series that spawned so many fans in their 5 series in 4 years! I loved the show, it was like MacGyver but it’s 4 of them, from building new weapons, strategizing offensive and defensive parameters for the villains and maintaining that crazy camaraderie! It was centred on soldiers of fortune on the run from the government and helping those people who are being oppressed and in need.

Crossing paths was just the beginning of a bigger plan as Col. Hannibal Smith puts it! Making it more contemporary this was based on the Iraq war that occurred in the 90’s. The characters are all different signifying a specialization that contributes to the objectives of the mission taken.

Directed and providing Screenplay is Joe Carnahan (Smokin’ Aces) while Produced by cinema making legends Ridley Scott (G.I. Jane) and Tony Scott (Enemy of the State) and with Stephen J. Cannell who co –created the team with Frank Lupo. He was able to provide audiences well known hit TV series in the 80’s and 90’s like “The Greatest American Hero”, “Riptide”, “21 Jump Street”, “The Renegade” and my personal favourite “The Hat Squad”!

Let’s tackle the team…

The guy who still has a “hangover” with a former flame Bradley Cooper (Hangover) aka Lt. Templeton “Faceman” Peck for me was the breakout character, he was second in command, loves the excitement of given missions, covert ops and he knows what his doing, definitely more confident, aggressive and in spite of all that, still have his arms full of women (even if she has a girlfriend tormenting them).  Bradley is slowly making his was to be the next Hollywood star to look at having the potential to be the next leading man with the likes of George Clooney, Tom Cruise and even with Tom Hanks. Well diversed in every given role he plays, in the film he makes it easy playing a soldier that can be wild with his cohorts, drama in one corner with the love of his life (right!) and action all around is all in the days work!

Former MMA player Rampage Jackson’s (Midnight Meat Train) portrayal of the Corporal Bosco “BA” Baracus was mediocre, though he still managed to give the character justification being a tough guy with a lot of heart! He was struggling to take on arms or be at peace which he reflected more into Ghandi’s way of life but in the end he found his mojo (Mohawk) back! Anything that is mechanical he can make it work and he lives by the creed of pitying anyone who needs to know a little better!

The man who was supposed to wait for three years to get himself cured, newcomer Sharlto Copley (District 9) the most entertaining from the bunch, he is still the “Howling Mad” Murdock. A Captain with superb pilot skills, a genius (at least in his own right) and keeps the team knocking their heads off, especially with BA who he had stepped on the wrong foot to begin with! He gives life to the team whether through one sided jokes or just straight up annoyance.

One of film industry’s finest actors, Liam Neeson (Kingdom of Heaven) has always been a fan favorite talent that defines direction, very instinctive and with charisma. He takes care of his boys and making sure they are out of trouble. I’m just not crazy about his lines being repeated all the time. There was this scene where Hannibal Smith keeps on calling Lynch in a cargo container; I still kept on hearing Peyton Westlake aka “Darkman” which he played in the first film of the trilogy. That was weird and the same time funny surreal!

I find their screen dynamic very credible not just being soldiers at arms but rather as brothers looking out for each other. The film gives audiences the feeling of inconsistencies but not leaving behind its intended purpose of getting the mission done and as well as being entertained.

The supporting casts such as Jessica Biel (Stealth) was very much underrated but for me, both were exceptionally profound in the delivery of their characters! They were able to act it with admonition given the levity of the situation, more so Patrick Wilson (Little Children) more so Patrick Wilson (Little Children) a CIA Top Dog who is pompous prick and a spoiled brat who gets what he wants where he wants it, still being a villain was well accepted!

There were times that certain sequences were over the top (tank from the sky and cargo containers) but still were executed very well (thanks to CGI and Green Screen). It was well-paced, entertaining, funny and action oriented like the way it was planned!

Unfortunately that’s not how fans and movie goers reacted, stating that the film only earned 176 M worldwide with 110 M budget that speaks a lot for any upcoming sequels that could have been! Critics also were not helpful given that the premise was convoluted and without regard for character development. Seriously, what do these people want from an action film that is even derivative from the original series. I do understand how Dirk Benedict (Battlestar Galactica) reaction how he just cut from the film for about a few seconds emphasizing on no respect!

It would not be much of a concern because Col. Smith always takes the plan into consideration and nothing makes him happier than a plan that comes together!
