Ghost in the Shell (2017)

Visually aesthetic and mind-blowing “screenplay” which can send you back to the past! #atmwatchingGITS1995

Ghost in the Shell

Paramount Pictures in association with DreamWorks Pictures, Reliance Entertainment, Arad Productions, Shanghai Film Group and Huahua Media present…

A “woman” in a stretcher is being delivered for a transplant but what we see is not an ordinary procedure! “Hanka” personnel hasten for the operation to take place, the patient who is tagged “2571” will revolutionize the future of amalgamating robotics and augmentation of the human body. So it begins, as the brain carefully leaves her, a cyborg “shell” serves host linking her “ghost” inside the cyberbrain and for the first time “she” breathes…

We do identify the “ghost” on how does it affect the machine while nothing to do with the physical organ particularly the brain, the essence or “consciousness” of a person is still intact somehow with its new prosthetic body. Directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and The Huntsman) and produced by Avi Arad and Steven Paul. Based on the best-selling manga created by artist Shirow Masamune in 1989, it follows the story of a dystopic future where humans and machine share a thin line of co-existence. From here, Section 9 of the Japanese government a tactical cyber-enhanced unit composed of soldiers, police officers and forensic scientists functioning under full discretion on counter-cyberterrorism, black-ops, special operations, and cyber-warfare.

I have been an avid fan of the anime series and the films but how does Hollywood bring to life this cyberpunk world – will find out as we get along in the story. Frankly, I think that the premise was redundant and falls short on the potential of making this a great film. The world of GITS is so vast, writers can actually “deep dive” into the canon then provide a think tank in making an actual script work. First of all, they just copied the opening sequence to which we can identify a robot undergoes transcendence while “humanizing” it in a form of a “white” female human body even the music was not spared. To add another cliché, from GITS (1996) and GITS: Innocence (2004) in the prologue where the Major assassinates a foreign diplomat and for the latter anime film, Batou and Togusa handles the case of a murdered employee while finding out the disappearance of their leader through Batou’s eyes (figuratively). Although there were some changes made like a Hanka Robotics official being hacked and killed in the live action version on the other hand, LOCUS Solus was the gynoid (sex robot dolls) company that was being investigated in the anime in congruence with government’s Sector 6 as well.

The director together with his cohorts Jamie Moss (Street Kings), William Wheeler (The Hoax) and Ehren Kruger (The Ring) regarded as promising screenwriters has given the one of the most lethargic live action animes of all time. They just interchanged the plot lines from the previous films and we know it can be spectacular to see sequences that can pay homage to the work of director Mamoru Oshii but seriously, I could have just watched the original films instead if I knew this was the blasphemy waiting for me on the big screen!

On the bright side, near seamless cinematography was handled by Jess Hall together with Jan Roelfs acting as the film’s production designer. It was fascinating to see how they envisioned a futuristic Hong Kong particularly in Yau Ma Tei and Jordan districts, turning the cityscape into giant holographic billboards aptly coined “Solograms” (solid holograms) by the director. It was amazing how the amalgamated urban and local setting still gives precedence to what Japan actually looks like at the present while supplanting technological advancements on its streets, buildings and the inhabitants.

Together with the help of Moving Picture Company (MPC) and WETA Digital the director, VFX Supervisor Guillame Rocheron and effects pioneer John Dkystra worked on the actual structural backdrop from the anime film, providing more than 1000 shots from the creation of the cyborg to the courtyard fight scenes with the hacked garbage truck driver. Seeing how the visuals work make “Minority Report” advertisements in the tunnels and the city look like minuscule at best both in size and through its subliminal messaging.

Now we take on the crew starting with the main protagonist, Scarlett Johansson (Lucy) as field commander Major Motoko Kusanagi / Mira Killian, to be honest, the thespian is a hit and miss for me. I do regard her for the chosen projects like “Lost in Translation”, “The Nanny Diaries”, “Lucy”, “Sing” but her versatility cannot still save her from films that need to bring more the character on who she portrays. She’s got the Major’s swagger especially when she walks and on how she looks back over her shoulder. But like I said Scarlett can bring the character in the play but even her performance cannot save (nor Margot Robbie) a film with the sole purpose is to garner only sales.

Takeshi Kitano (Johnny Mnemonic) as Section 9 founder and Director Daisuke Aramaki is known for his earlier works in the field of comedy and later become known as “Beat”. His demeanor for work is contested, simply put he does have an indispensable unit not only to rely on to get the work done but he has faith in them and they trust each other no matter the cost. Usually, he has some security to protect him but not Takeshi who can put a bullet in your face if he really wants too.

Speaking of which, Pilou Asbæk (The Great Wall) as second in command Batou.  He is considered as the closest to the Major both professionally and personally. The actual one-two punch of Sector 9 literally, they have been considered having mutual affections but it did not apply on a congested premise especially with their line of work,  Pilou and Scarlett had collaborated already in the film “Lucy” back in 2014.

I was really glad the Singaporean thespian Chin Han (2012) is turning into marketable projects like his previous work with “The Dark Knight” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”. He plays Togusa one of my favorite characters, considered to be a “natural” and prefers to be one while having a repartee after his teammate Borma since he underwent another cyberization. He is quite prominent in handling investigations especially after he cracked the “Laughing Man” case and even made him led his own team.

The rest of the team which we see only for a few segments from Zimbabwe to New Zealand, Tawanda Manyimo (The Rover) portrays Borma the demolition specialist. Lasarus Ratuere (The Mule) as Carlos Ishikawa one of the supposed lead investigators who handle covert intelligence, tactical warfare, and data manipulation assignments, basically he is also a soldier for JSDF (Japan Special Defence Force) having served with the Major and Batou as depicted in the series.

Yutaka Izumihara (The Great Raid) as Saito the marksman, a sniper who was just used at the last moment. His design is by far the most grotesque looking and lazy. His eyes actually are uplinked in a satellite called the “Hawkeye” to give him the precision shooting he requires but it still can be hacked. But where is Pazu the former Yakuza? Turns out He was replaced by Ladriya the weapons specialist she is portrayed by newcomer Danusia Samal (Boom) so like I’ve mentioned earlier, these characters were used only to depict the team nothing more to show for (what a loss).

The quasi villain of the story, Michael Carmen Pitt (I Origins) as Kuze / Hideo, regarded a revolutionist, terrorist and a member of the anti-augmentation rebellion. Juveniles that were captured by Hanka enforcers only to be made as test subjects to what they were fighting against. He was actually a significant character of the 2nd GIG tv series plus the GITS film titled the “Individual Eleven” same modus operandi but on a different setting. To be honest, Michael was not given a chance to act the part with emphasis on having a short running time for the film, more so the screenplay was not able to convey the actual emotions the two lovers had when they were “biologically” capable.

Peter Ferdinando (Hyena) as Cutter the CEO for Hanka Robotics, the man hides a clandestine purpose, not even his clear intentions of providing the country the means to persevere life with the business he’s running, how ironic what abominations he will bring to this world with science and technology. He is clear with his intentions, straight to the point and let others know that he is untouchable since the government supports his program. While Juliette Binoche (Godzilla)as Dr. Ouelet, she is not only the scientist who oversees Mira’s evolution despite her obligations to Cutter and her work, in the end, she knows that every human being deserves to be respected and to be free.

Certain aspects of how the film was reciprocated by the public and critics alike panning on the premise relegated to the main protagonist’s background and how she copes life after being transferred to a cyborg body. It seems that she was more focused on her personal roots when was she born? Who were her parents? Where did she live? Giving emphasis on her déjà vu moments where bits and pieces of her previous life are being recollected. Unlike from the manga, films, and series she embraced who she was but noting something of significance was her time with Kuze in the hospital where they both shared loss, anonymity, love and paper cranes.

In closing, the whitewashing predicament hasn’t helped Hollywood based companies producing films that only concerns with one “race” and that is to be on top of the box office sales. Humans driven by greed and lust for power seek always any means necessary to explore knowledge then exploit it first with those who are not deemed “fit to survive” until we evolve into something more “godlike”. That’s probably the nexus point here maybe we can learn from it for either we fight for the future or be their “puppets”.

The Town (2010)

“For where your treasure is, there will be your heart also.” – Matthew 6:21

The Town

Warner Bros. Pictures in association with Legendary Pictures, Thunder Road Films and GK Films present…

Written and Directed by Ben Affleck (Gone Baby Gone) the film was based on Chuck Hogan’s gripping novel “The Prince of Thieves” which was published in 2004. A story of a bank robber who did not only stole money from the community of Charlestown, Boston but also their values and pride! But that was just the beginning; Ben together with newcomers Peter Craig and Aaron Stockard wrote the Screenplay to convey a part of this city’s facts between “Tunies” and “Townies” in which criminal tendencies for robbery has been passed down from one generation to the next. It was self-oriented, straight-up premise with machismo filled dialogue!

Going back to the point man! Someone is in a roll here, Ben also stars as the film’s highest profiled bank robber Douglas MacRay a seeming nice guy who acts as the de facto leader of an ensemble. Together with his wrecking crew, they meticulously target armored vans with guards that have the least tendency to bite back! He was able to have this character’s bad habits or maybe he had the wrong crowd surrounding him all his life starting with his family; Chris Cooper (American Beauty) is Stephen MacRay, like father like son who has the same line of work while having the demeanor of being compassionate and loyal that makes him more dangerous!

The actor had some moments in his career to shine with the late 90’s “Chasing Amy”, “Good Will Hunting” and “Shakespeare in Love” and reasonably fell on blockbuster films like “Armageddon”, “Pearl Harbor”, “The Sum of All Fears” and his superhero take on Marvel’s “Daredevil”. He had bounced back ever since and fought his way to ante up the game even with his brother Casey and long time friend Matt Damon who both had better offers and projects. Through Directing, Ben was able to provide Hollywood thought provoking stories that gave him accolades and for the public to embrace his work once more!

The film was filled with “Madmen” and Jon Hamm (Stolen) is no exemption! He portrays FBI Special Agent Adam Frawley who literally takes his job seriously; he was a fan favorite to be the next “Superman” though not gaining an audition, he could settle working at street level in fighting crime.

On the other hand, Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) is back in his villainy role since his dog days in “S.W.A.T”, he portrays Doug’s bestfriend James Coughlin the impetuous gang member who never backs down to no one even to his best friend! These two were the best performers in the film, seeing they roam around Boston literally working on both sides of a coin. Relentless and fixated to their ideals they did their parts “to a T” not over the top nor was it cheesy!

The sober but adequate Blake Lively (The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants) at least for this film! Krista Coughlin, a former lover of the lead actor and sister to James who at least I found has the acting capacity and be genuine enough to make it work. She can definitely be into drama where she will find better offers in the next few years. While Rebecca Hall (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) flaunts her career with near perfect portrayals. She portrays a Bank Manager named Claire Keesey, so naive, predictable and most importantly forgiving!

The story was ardently schemed moreover since it was based on a book with crime as its catalyst; there was already a hint of proverbial morality injected to make it additionally interesting. While it succumbed to controversies linking bank robberies in different countries for the past few years, it only suggests how human nature works when it is pushed to its limits!

I used to remember about the famous robber from Australia named Ned Kelly which was made into a film with the late Heath Ledger who had a last stand with the Victoria Police wearing body armor and a head plate. While two of the best actors in film history got on their cat and mouse chase in the prolific film titled “Heat”, a story regarding another bank robber named McCauley played by Robert De Niro which was loosely based on true accounts from former real life Chicago Detective Chuck Adamson and lastly, Johnny Depp portrayed John Dillinger in the film “Public Enemies” with the same Director Michael Mann.

Everybody needs a second chance to be part of society and be absolved from past sins. But not everyone has that same standpoint where each individual walks away thinking that they have paid their dues more so with the people and the law that presents itself when needed. Overall, it was gritty, stunning and ego driven not contemplating on the action plus the drama but rather on its given mindset:  “I’ll see you again – this side or the other!”

The A-Team (2010)

20th Century Fox in association with Dune Entertainment, Top Cow Productions, Big Screen Productions, Stephen J. Cannell Productions, Ingenious Film Partners, Phoenix Film Partners and Scott Free Productions present…

the-a-team

As part of my military movie marathon, I found this story penchant in the field of soldier tactics, gallantry and hardware!!! Filled with action, thrills and comedy that makes it worth watching all over again!

Now, the film was based in an 80’s TV series that spawned so many fans in their 5 series in 4 years! I loved the show, it was like MacGyver but it’s 4 of them, from building new weapons, strategizing offensive and defensive parameters for the villains and maintaining that crazy camaraderie! It was centred on soldiers of fortune on the run from the government and helping those people who are being oppressed and in need.

Crossing paths was just the beginning of a bigger plan as Col. Hannibal Smith puts it! Making it more contemporary this was based on the Iraq war that occurred in the 90’s. The characters are all different signifying a specialization that contributes to the objectives of the mission taken.

Directed and providing Screenplay is Joe Carnahan (Smokin’ Aces) while Produced by cinema making legends Ridley Scott (G.I. Jane) and Tony Scott (Enemy of the State) and with Stephen J. Cannell who co –created the team with Frank Lupo. He was able to provide audiences well known hit TV series in the 80’s and 90’s like “The Greatest American Hero”, “Riptide”, “21 Jump Street”, “The Renegade” and my personal favourite “The Hat Squad”!

Let’s tackle the team…

The guy who still has a “hangover” with a former flame Bradley Cooper (Hangover) aka Lt. Templeton “Faceman” Peck for me was the breakout character, he was second in command, loves the excitement of given missions, covert ops and he knows what his doing, definitely more confident, aggressive and in spite of all that, still have his arms full of women (even if she has a girlfriend tormenting them).  Bradley is slowly making his was to be the next Hollywood star to look at having the potential to be the next leading man with the likes of George Clooney, Tom Cruise and even with Tom Hanks. Well diversed in every given role he plays, in the film he makes it easy playing a soldier that can be wild with his cohorts, drama in one corner with the love of his life (right!) and action all around is all in the days work!

Former MMA player Rampage Jackson’s (Midnight Meat Train) portrayal of the Corporal Bosco “BA” Baracus was mediocre, though he still managed to give the character justification being a tough guy with a lot of heart! He was struggling to take on arms or be at peace which he reflected more into Ghandi’s way of life but in the end he found his mojo (Mohawk) back! Anything that is mechanical he can make it work and he lives by the creed of pitying anyone who needs to know a little better!

The man who was supposed to wait for three years to get himself cured, newcomer Sharlto Copley (District 9) the most entertaining from the bunch, he is still the “Howling Mad” Murdock. A Captain with superb pilot skills, a genius (at least in his own right) and keeps the team knocking their heads off, especially with BA who he had stepped on the wrong foot to begin with! He gives life to the team whether through one sided jokes or just straight up annoyance.

One of film industry’s finest actors, Liam Neeson (Kingdom of Heaven) has always been a fan favorite talent that defines direction, very instinctive and with charisma. He takes care of his boys and making sure they are out of trouble. I’m just not crazy about his lines being repeated all the time. There was this scene where Hannibal Smith keeps on calling Lynch in a cargo container; I still kept on hearing Peyton Westlake aka “Darkman” which he played in the first film of the trilogy. That was weird and the same time funny surreal!

I find their screen dynamic very credible not just being soldiers at arms but rather as brothers looking out for each other. The film gives audiences the feeling of inconsistencies but not leaving behind its intended purpose of getting the mission done and as well as being entertained.

The supporting casts such as Jessica Biel (Stealth) was very much underrated but for me, both were exceptionally profound in the delivery of their characters! They were able to act it with admonition given the levity of the situation, more so Patrick Wilson (Little Children) more so Patrick Wilson (Little Children) a CIA Top Dog who is pompous prick and a spoiled brat who gets what he wants where he wants it, still being a villain was well accepted!

There were times that certain sequences were over the top (tank from the sky and cargo containers) but still were executed very well (thanks to CGI and Green Screen). It was well-paced, entertaining, funny and action oriented like the way it was planned!

Unfortunately that’s not how fans and movie goers reacted, stating that the film only earned 176 M worldwide with 110 M budget that speaks a lot for any upcoming sequels that could have been! Critics also were not helpful given that the premise was convoluted and without regard for character development. Seriously, what do these people want from an action film that is even derivative from the original series. I do understand how Dirk Benedict (Battlestar Galactica) reaction how he just cut from the film for about a few seconds emphasizing on no respect!

It would not be much of a concern because Col. Smith always takes the plan into consideration and nothing makes him happier than a plan that comes together!

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011)

“The Law of Celestial Mechanics dictates that when two objects collide, there is always damage of a collateral nature.”

sherlock-holmes-a-game-of-shadows

Warner Bros. Pictures in association with Silver Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures present…

From the continuing saga of the “World’s Greatest Detective” comes the sequel A Game of Shadows! Based on the popular works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the film was derived extensively from the story “The Final Problem” where the Author had to finally end the adventures of his fictional super sleuth and focus on his day job! Instead, with the public’s clamor and his mother’s strong advice…thankfully the game is still afoot!

One of British’s finest Directors is Guy Ritchie (Rock N Rolla) who makes a fantastic comeback not just for the characters but also in providing a well-written juxtaposed continuity! Guy gives it a bigger and better plot sending the “original” dynamic duo to save Monarchs and their countries from coercion to start a war! He maximizes his entire repertoire to give the audience all the amenities of action, comedy, drama and mystery! For the latter, not that much comparing from the first film but it helps to send the message across the border that someone with wealth, power and a whole new level of intelligence asserts himself to entangle the whole world in utter chaos!

Storytelling were given insight by both husband and wife Kieran (Paperman) and Michele Mulroney, they were able to set the tone to further access the life of the Detective also, to target specific the anti-thesis that elaborates the story in a grander scale! Mixing the right type of dialogue, the Writers were able to deliver the unsuspected “oxygen contraption” in the nick of time!

Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) and Jude Law (Repomen) returns to the big screen from their 2009 blockbuster hit Sherlock Holmes! They reprise their roles as the eccentric Consulting Detective and the always loyal Dr. Watson. Their off-put chemistry seems to be the tagline for the story to be conceived only as “brotherly love” not to be detrimental; it works on a given layer (as long as it stays there!)

Robert makes his portrayal so easy, his wit and comedy never falls flat in delivery and to his overall performance! Another strong asset was his understanding of Baritsu, the self-defence martial arts captured in its best form from a camera’s point of view to the viewer! Jude on the other hand, has given the “side-kick” persona into the well received Doctor, inexplicably fascinated with Sherlock both as a partner in crime fighting and as a friend! On a side note, it comes to a point in time where one has to get married while the other will have so solve crimes on his own…or so it seems!

Professor James Moriarty, an enigmatic and ruthless criminal mastermind, a math genius and dubbed by Holmes as the “Napoleon of Crime”! He was born and raised with wealth which gave him the best education, derived from Scotland Yard’s own notorious criminal files, his name was Adam Worth and to another malicious Astronomer Simon Newcomb who likes to destroy other scientists’ reputation for his own benefit!

You would really despise Jared Harris (To the Ends of the Earth)as he is absolutely demented, he gives life to the “would be world conqueror” having spun the enormity of his web of diabolical proportions has made him “interested “ with his recent endeavors for the Detective’s mind to keep busy!

A little tit-for-tat with the thief for hire Irene Adler played by the always alluring Rachel McAdams (The Time Traveller’s Wife) which jumpstarted the premise and sets it in motion! Other supporting casts were extraordinary even for Stanley the Butler! Stephen Fry (V for Vendetta) is the aloof elder brother Mycroft Holmes, an indispensable chap from the British Government who Sherlock says has far more intellect than he is but rather being stagnant leaving his younger brother to always do the leg work while Moriarty’s ace assassin Col. Sebastian Moran played by Paul Anderson (A Lonely Place to Die) the best sniper in the British Army who served in Afghanistan and was given a dishonorable discharge which was not disclosed as of the moment!

The film was entertaining but got lesser approval ratings on its dragging back-story and escapades, which should have been focused on the “bigger fish to fry”! I can say it’s a let go seeing that there were instances that was not necessary to linger on; one example would be the lost brother segment and the gypsy encampment scenes! It had an intriguing start that gave emphasis on what was going on between countries on the verge of conflict and culminating it to a very profound, gasping for air ending!

From the original standpoint of the Author’s “Final Problem” narrative, it says that Holmes was attacked a few times which correspond to the movie’s sequences from the thugs getting beaten by Holmes, one of them was carrying a cosh or in modern times is called a nightstick and another was the cannon fired which brought down a wall and bricks which flung all over the place including to Holmes and Watson’s direction. The shoot out and mortar heavy scenes in the forest were amazing using slow motion capture to visualize the veracity of ballistics toring up trees and flesh makes the word “incoming” better suited to be left unsaid…and just run for your lives!

An inquiry or better yet a statement cannot be set aside seeing that both protagonists at the Switzerland Peace Summit were “dancing” together! Why would the Director and Writer’s imply on something that was not even mandated giving the film more speculation on the “bromance” of the two! Are they pouring more gasoline into the fire?

Cinematography was handled once more by French 1992 Academy Awards and BAFTA Winner Philippe Rousselot (The Big Fish) where he incorporates a hands down pivotal screen shots from Greenwich, London to Strasbourg, France that invigorates the senses while fan favorite 2008 Academy Award Winner Hans Zimmer (Batman Begins) brings in his usual bespoke sound combining the fancy saloon piano while giving it a “kick” through an upbeat tempo from the string section! Making it fast paced with a mystery being hefty on the background!

Recently, I concluded the two outstanding series of Sherlock on BBC TV which they have made it so seamlessly written and unique in its own way! Showing how Writers Mark Gatiss and Stephen Moffat pictured the powerful and moving climax of Moriarty and Holmes in the episode “The Reichenbach Falls” while Director Guy Ritchie version made it direct and personal coming from the original work.

It got me applauding even when a chess game being played suddenly been inclined into a verbal stand-off while preparing for the inevitable “physical prowess” between the rivalry of the greatest minds on the planet! I didn’t realize how they would be able to encapsulate the fight scenes with so much detail and excitement which makes it so palpable!

Garnering more than $440 million worldwide is a genuine feat to accomplish seeing that it presents a certified blockbuster coming from the recent winter holidays! After this, there were two significant stories that culminate the pre and post hiatus of Sherlock Holmes death which should be tackled in the coming sequels… a Hound and an Empty House wouldn’t you agree?

Sherlock Holmes (2009)

“Never theorize before you have data. Invariably, you end up twisting facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts.”

sherlock-holmes

Warner Bros. Pictures in association with Silver Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures present…

Based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s work on what transpired to be as the “World’s Greatest Detective”! Eccentric, true! Unconventional, absolutely! But most of all, one of the brilliant minds of his time! His character was given birth coming from idle days at the Author’s clinic located at Portsmouth, while waiting for customers; he would scribe his creation’s adventures and misadventures to pass the time!

His mentor from the university Joseph Bell was the progenitor, the image which Sir Arthur was trying to emulate for his new found hobby, having the same demeanor for intuition, deduction and inference and thus Sherlock Holmes was born to solve mysteries and fight crime as a Consulting Detective!

Running as if there was no tomorrow, Sherlock’s fleeting feet moves ahead from the Scotland Yard Police with two stern faced individuals who shows utmost concern on what they are up against! Yes, Sherlock Holmes is on the case! He needs to prevent a cult leader and practitioner of the paranormal from taking another victim but there is more to this mere supernatural forces alone…

Always full of energy, wit, courage and determination Sherlock Holmes is brought to life by Robert Downey Jr. (Zodiac) his portrayal could not have been taken better by another actor, he is passionate with his work  more so to his objective as a performer to his audience!  While the fast paced movements compliments the slow motion capture of “kicking ass 101” applying Baritsu to a given number of opponents, Robert’s fantastic display of choreography and understanding of the art has made these scenes flagrant and unforgettable!

His partner in “crime solving” is Dr. John Watson a former soldier who served in Afghanistan has made so much testimony for his roommate, friend and brother at arms! Jude Law (Contagion) provides not just bantering humor with his colleague but also pieces of advice and at times reprimanding for his unusual lifestyle!

Full of spectacular fight scenes and funny moments not just from the two protagonists but through the escapades they go to and the anonymities they need to solve before everything is too late! Having said, the performances of these two main protagonists were exceptional seeing that how someone like Holmes coming from his Bohemian lifestyle, vagrant and absurd has been changed into society’s respectable (almost) figures and this is thanks to the Doctor who seem undeterred to find a way (die trying) to at least sway the sleuth from living like a tramp and to add, avoid him from further experimenting on their dog!

No denying that he is one of the most sought out actors of this generation specifically playing the villainy of every hero, thwarting their efforts to seize the day until they all crash down to his will. Mark Strong (Robin Hood) does so impeccably his heinous crimes using both intellect and the dark arts of demonic rituals.

A thief, a friend and a lover Irene Adler is portrayed by Rachel McAdams (The Notebook) she has a penchant for stealing things even the heart of the Detective which makes him absolutely fascinated or even more, enamored by the young lass! Rachel exudes charisma, style and wit while trying to be a sincere while still acts as a double agent for a very influential figure.

The set-up in terms of timeline was very adequate, precise and concomitant from attire, manners not being flumped up in a narrowed down studio where a specific shot is just taken over and over again from the same stage. Even the Tower Bridge scenes were fantastic. Academy Award and BAFTA Winner Cinematographer Philippe Rousselot (The Tailor of Panama) has proven yet again to provide the audience sweeping scenes of the era while making it more appealing through seamless shots of old London!

It may seem farfetched seeing that it still did not contend to be the highest grossing films in the domestic front but it sure was a blockbuster in the box office upon reaching international shores reaching $524 million in its worldwide receipts. Surely a sequel is in waiting or rather someone is still not finished playing “games” with the Detective unless proven he is far better having the greatest mind in the world…or so it would seem!

The Constant Gardener (2005)

An unforgettable performance from Ralph and Rachel as they bring a story of compassion, social awareness and love that is so constantly needed in the world right now!

the-constant-gardener

Focus Features in association with UK Film Council, Scion Films and Potboiler Productions present…

Adapted from one of the bestselling and critically acclaimed novels of David John Moore Cornwell   (aka John le Carre) comes The Constant Gardener!  A former spy turned novelist who worked with MI5 and MI6 in his prime. So far, all of his grand works has come into fruition already for the big screen adaptation which includes: The Spy Who Came In from the Cold – 1965, The Tailor of Panama – 2001 and the upcoming film with an all-star cast in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy set for a release in the Fall of 2011.

His vocation entails comparison and contrast at the same time with the timeless Ian Fleming who already made a name for himself before John started his career. They have this innate and intuitive passion for spies but with Ian’s fictional world renowned British Agent James Bond who deals with espionage and missions in an action oriented genre, John on the other hand collaborated more on his own hero George Smiley of the SIS (Secret Intelligence Service) who is inclined on the psychological drama instead!

Another mind numbing performance that not only boasts an outstanding cast but a Production Crew that gave awe-inspiring and brilliantly made films that captured our imagination time and again! Nominated and awarded at the Oscars, Golden Globe and BAFTA (talk about flying colours). (Academy Awards and Golden Globe) for Best Supporting Actress – Rachel Weisz and (BAFTA) for Best Editing – Claire Simpson who gave us her outstanding achievement on the war epic drama Platoon!

From acclaimed Director Fernando Meirelles who brought us “City of God”! To give us more understanding to the film’s plot, another non-linear thriller that let us bring into full circle of past joys and for a tomorrow which we pray never come to engulf our hurts!  Fernando, coming from Brazil gives more in depth analysis as he relates and share to the story a fully grasped understanding on the dealings of its Pharmaceutical companies and how much competencies they bring to the third world countries. By carefully manipulating those who are considered ignorant for self-preservation, he brings in Writer Jeffrey Caine who gives a fantastic Screenplay adaptation encompassing all the details that sets foot on a union of two completely different people across the continents that explodes in a chain reaction of events spiraling from deception, murder, conspiracy and the love of a man who holds the key in solving one of the biggest uproars in history! Set in locations from Berlin, London, Nairobi and especially Kenya where the main story that revolves in this film is guaranteed to open our eyes to the harsh facts about the governments, their plans about commercialism propaganda!

Academy Award Nominees Producer Simon Channing Williams and Photographer Cesar Charlone bring “more food on the table” and with the right collaboration and direction, this novel brings light to what is really happening around the world. Choosing Africa and the conditions they thrive on everyday has been captured immensely by these two very talented crew members!

A British Diplomat by the name of Justin Quayle a man whose zeal for his gardening and for his wife Tessa embraces the journey that he’s about to delve in and perhaps he’s not going to come back from! Ralph Fiennes (The English Patient) is extraordinary as always coming from his role of a more ambitious but incessantly evil “Sorcerer”, he is again brought back to the grounds of a real life VIP (Very Important Passivist) of a country surrounded by so much oppression, greed and power hungry individuals!

His wife, Tessa Quayle is portrayed by Rachel Weisz (The Fountain) a strong woman dedicated to her job by physically being on the hard lines, a humanitarian activist she wants to expose the real truth behind the illegal activities promulgated by a giant company that makes thousands of lives miserable and it’s only the tip of the iceberg! There is a good saying that “curiosity killed the cat” in which case it matters on whom or what got her in this predicament! Rachel has gone a long way of becoming a very respectable and admirable actress in the films she has been involved with and I hope more projects are in store for her!

The supporting casts add levity to the plot and to be honest! Yet, I was never a fan of Danny Huston (Robin Hood) in spite of his genuine acting I still consider him lack lustred for the roles his plays!  He is Sandy Woodrow self indulgent and a scheming Acting Head for the Mission who tries desperately to get what he wants especially condoning with his lust for something more personal! Another VIP (Very Important Prick) is Sir Bernard Pellegrin conspired by Bill Nighy (The Boat that Rocked) a member of the British High Commission and Head of F.C.O (Foreign & Commonwealth Office) for Africa! Working with cynical people does bring home the bacon to so to speak and it is likely in the end that the truth does really hurt!

Outstanding, breath taking, forlorn and mesmerizing! It was intended to be a thriller but ended with a more subtle inclinations towards a love story melded with the corruption of society! No words are enough to describe this film; you really have to think through how this endearing so called marriage got so twisted and its repercussions so intense leaving wakes of shattered dreams and lives! I can only imagine someone would go so far as to compromise the people they love just to accomplish the ends with means even so moral and decent, can never control the general consensus! Someone could easily relate with the Quayle’s and seeing how this would go from end to finish, it will definitely keep you glued on the screen!

For Africa, its communities, children, women and men who survive everyday! I say to you, keep on fighting and keep on living for your dreams and your future. It could never be simpler to say how your hearts bleed with so much pain, the kind of treatment you face as a race is not without question undeserving and with this last statement…no matter how uncertain life maybe you can be certain that you are in our prayers!

The Place Beyond the Pines (2012)

Meticulously crafted as it painstakingly tries to resolve past wounds which may heal but leaves a mark that becomes more overbearing!

The Place Beyond the Pines

Focus Features in association with Electric City Entertainment, Hunting Lane Films, Pines Productions, Sidney Kimmel Entertainment and Silverwood Films present…

The story of two men and fathers who were at the crossroads of their lives as Director and Writer Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine) with Ben Coccio (Zero Day) and Darius Marder (Loot) as he tells another tale of heartbreaking proportions! The story asks how do you redeem yourself from your past mistakes and how does your situation in life bear the actual weight of your actions? As the film convey a powerful crime drama that allows three interlocked stories of conscience, morality and obligation to the people you love the most…your family!

I can’t help but to give enough praise on Derek’s works which does not only comply standards but it excels them as well! The delivery of his narrative, the poignancy and surreal atmosphere of different people making it as cohesive as possible to allow a free flowing and yet hand gripped emotion filled performances was commendable at all points! He lifts you up enough above the clouds where the quiet reserved transparency of subtleness in terms of the characters susceptibility in life was being undertaken while below it, you have this storm brewing attributed from the repercussions made by human judgment throwing everything into chaos which actually hides behind what is in store for the premise to take place!

Cinematography by Sean Bobbitt (The Killer Inside Me) collaborates with the Film Score which was produced by Mike Patton (Crank High Voltage) while the former gives his detail centric eyes in capturing the surroundings of Schenectady, New York, making the premise relatable as it conveys the actual back drop without the need for too much technicality involved. On the other hand, Mike releases his take on convulsing sweeping music from highspeed chases to quiet talks, in moments of reflecting dread or simple means of happiness.

THE BIKER WHO RODE THE LIGHTNING…

Broke and riding his “blues” away, Ryan Gosling (The Notebook) is a motorcycle driver / stuntman Luke Glanton. In the past few years Ryan had the same type of character roles that sees him as a struggling lover or father who does not have decent work or a job at all and still provides any way he can for his family whatever it takes…

He has also been classified to play these sober, troubled and cranky eponymous individuals who were hard luck in everything they touches! Speaking of the devil, as Eva Mendes (We Own the Night) who portrays Romina, a past flame who suddenly shows up at the carnival trying to settle unresolved issues that emits a light at Luke brighter than his sordid workplace! Their dynamic was easy to follow, as both carried their performances adjacent to a broken up family.

THE COP WHO CRASHED LIKE THUNDER…

Academy Award Nominee and Golden Globe Winner Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook) as a low ranking Police Officer Avery Cross had only a short stint with Luke but was a very significant one! His wife Rose Byrne (I Love You Too) as Jennifer Cross, she had a minor role just enough to get her message across while her husband being a so-called hero was left with more questions with what he was trying to instill in law enforcement. For his intentions was clear until it found a brick wall to slam into!

Avery is a decent cop with high expectation and education to go with it. But he never got the chance to prove his worth due to bad influences and decision making which makes him an easy target for corruption. Bradley after having only a few but box-office worthy films got his official break in the award winning “Silver Linings Playbook”. The actor’s versatility again proved the public how much first impression can go a long way seeing that it can catapult anyone’s career once you know how to allocate your aces!

THE PLACE WHERE IT ALL COLLIDES…

With teenage rebellion and juvenile angst running amok in the later part of the film, bear in mind that with an all star cast, the last pieces of the puzzle were the ones who stole the thunder from their fathers!  With lucrative films under his belt, Dane Dehaan (Lawless) the guy can really execute troubled childhood portrayals; basically he has been typecasted already but still gives out a breakthrough performance each and every single time! While his on-screen friend turned foe newcomer, Emory Cohen (Smash) was not a push over certifying that he can go toe-in-toe with the superstars of cinema to think that he has a very shortlisted credentials.

Playing the game as he always does, manipulative and malevolent! Ray Liotta (Goodfellas) as Senior Officer Peter Deluca, this is like a walk in the park for this guy! He has done these types of films hundreds of times and just thinking about villains who act as good guys, Tinsel Town does know where to get its prospects in their pipeline. While coming off from the recently released “Star Trek: Into Darkness” Bruce Greenwood (Hollywood Homicide) plays District Attorney Bill Killcullen who jumps on the bandwagon to compensate his personal needs providing his other services for the corrupt officers of the Police Department! They both play supporting casts but with clear objectives while making it as “short but sweet” (pun intended) as much as possible to relay to the audience.

I remember earlier young stars like Nick Stahl from the film “Bully” and those who had better luck in their career and job offers with the likes of Johnny Depp, Leonardo Di Caprio, Shia Lebeouf and Paul Dano who are all very talented actors of their generation!

They say that when the past catches up with you, all things that you have done will be reflected of who you are and the significant part of it is, we are a part of something bigger and it all begins with a stone’s throw in a pond called life! This is where the irony of intentions and the consequences that  follows permeates on what you do as it ripples out and engulfs through all your daily experiences, it is just up to you on how you make this effect become your legacy!

Drive (2011)

What drives you?

Drive

FilmDistrict in association with Bold Films, Odd Lot Entertainment, Marc Platt Productions and Seed Productions present…

Based on the 2005 novel of the same title, Author James Sallis made this transition from the pages to film a possible bet for the Oscars! It was like Grease (more music less the musical) meets Transporter and then it suddenly turns into Halloween’s horrific masked killer gone amok! The story had a lot more to offer not just romance, drama or action that’s because it encompasses all of them!

With an electronica 80’s vibe, throw in a bit of noir and brutality and you’ll get Drive! It pushes the envelope in a  hypnotic, high octane thrill ride that alleviates your senses getting you back on ground zero’s touching relationship between the Driver and Irene and then catapults you again in breathtaking car chases, blood and gore scenes! I really thought the opening was one of the best in a long while in heist films; it was captured appropriately showing the Driver’s ability to be very calm and collected, a keen observant in his surroundings! On a side note, the night shoot even covered Lakers and Clipper own Staples Center in the process which even mentioned “Lob Angeles” very own Mr. “High Griffinition” himself!

Having failed the driving tests eight times, Director Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson) was still able to give his best to let us experience one of the best adapted screenplays ever made! (you might say he’s “driven”) I was applauding the film with it’s awesome display of storytelling and delivery of characters! Together with Academy Award Nominee Hosseign Amini, he was in charge of the Screenplay which definitely hit the right tones to give the book adaptation a remarkable place in the big screen! How he delivers the transition from the book’s overwhelming and yet poignant story gives an added impression on poetry and Hosseign did not disappoint as they placed non-linear takes to give it a surreal cinematic experience! Another factor to consider was, there was not too much dialogue especially for the “Hero” and yet his actions speak louder than words! This is the next generation of collaborative partnerships between Actor and Director, seeing that another project is now under production from Nicolas and Ryan going to Thailand and finding out why “only God forgives”?

Director of Photography Newton Thomas Sigel (The Usual Suspects) used a car rig camera and a rigged helicopter to enable a wider coverage of the shots in Los Angeles as it allows Ryan to concentrate more on his acting while someone else drives the car and perform his stunts! Director Michael Mann also made the same adjustments when filming “Collateral”, the process made the film not just maintain its grittiness, darker mood with low lights and urban cityscapes but also give it genuine realism! To add, another remarkable feat was the shot from the motel where thugs gave the visceral meaning for “wetworks”, my jaw is still widely agape just thinking about it!

Rising superstar Ryan Gosling (Ides of March) in one of his finest display of characters leaving behind so many biting the dust! He only doesn’t drive proficiently; he also bare knuckle fists anyone who crosses his path if needed! It’s a film that started as a simple premise for a mechanic and stunt double moonlighting as a getaway driver by night, now how can you make someone so mild mannered from the way he carries himself and  fill that up with so much emotion and anger?

What I perceive is, he is a loner and he’s a nobody! No one pays attention to him except when he’s in front of the wheel! Shannon his employer at the garage gives him the “special incentives” which he gladly accepts but with his own conditions (Transporter anyone?) but does it so seamlessly! There are a very few actors that made it into superstardom with real honest work ethic while choosing the right projects and infuse the roles given. Johnny Depp, Leonardo Di Caprio, Matt Damon all made the most of the right choices which placed them where they are now!

Carey Mulligan (Shame) as the single mother Irene, living with her son Benicio who contemplates on her next door neighbor and later on falls in love with him! She was able to carry the load for her troubled family and was able to bring a very nice chemistry with Ryan! Now with her husband coming out from prison all things gets blown out of proportion (both figuratively and literally)!  Oscar Isaac (Robin Hood) is Standard Gabriel (what name is this?) who owes a huge debt of money to another gangster and later got what he deserved! I find it funny he still looks no different and how it connects his villainy from another character by the name of King John from his previous film while taxing the townsfolk so heavily, now he is the one being robbed back by an “Archer” in the woods!

Supporting cast was a powerhouse coming from Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) a garage repair shop owner named Shannon! Getting some shady deals with Albert Brooks (Bad Day in the Block) is gangster and business man Bernie Rose; the guy loves only three things his “modus operandi”, his cursing and stabbing people to death! He has a partner, a Jewish Pizza Diner Mobster by the name of Nino portrayed by Ron Perlman (Acts of Violence) who makes life miserable for everyone. A veteran actor who most of the time portrays an anti-hero or a villain, very dedicated and a fan favorite considering the roles he takes especially in CBM’s!

To give it a unique look, we can see a typical love story, crime, suspense and a whole lot of groove music! Refn recommended Johnny Jewel’s previous titles “Under your Spell” and “A Real Hero” for Cliff Martinez to work on! Giving the audience not just eye candy but also ear candy! To add, the iconic satin jacket with a golden scorpion was also influenced in the era’s rock band KISS which sort of gives a subliminal value for the audience!

Overall, the film brings the conformity of moral codes set in place by the main protagonist, becoming a hero not just for the people around him but also gives him the acknowledgement to fight justice even if it means to kill! Seriously, where does the objective of becoming a murderer be in any way righteous?  It doesn’t! It only depicts on how the Driver saves lives even if it means eternal damnation or reckless abandon for his own safety! I believe it’s what you call selflessness and that is why he is alone but with integrity instilled in his inner being while he drives off into the night…

A coin drops…a wolf’s howl…a phone rings! Catch you later, “Nightcall” is playing in my head!

Collateral (2004)

“I can tell you why people go insane; I can show you how you can do the same!”

Collateral

Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Studios present…

It’s a numbers game! Two opposite men, two interlocking jobs, five destinations and one life changing night…simple math right?

A fast paced, no holds barred killing spree that follows the story of a hit man who hires a cab driver as it turns into a night of adversely, sullen proportions! The objective was to get to his five targets that were involved in a pending drug indictment case in the following morning. Tom Cruise (Minority Report) makes a full swing here coming from a long line of heroes he portrayed in every film he’s been with.

Tom has played so much character driven representation in his lifetime but not like this, not as an antagonist. Cold and brutal in his work as he demands nothing less from what he does as it allows to support his intended goals. He always gives his charisma to do the talking but with this film though, he still loves to run and shoot people however, the only catch now is he had a conscience and with his job it could be devastating…

The dynamic between the two actors was so much fun to watch seeing who gets the upper hand as it leads to a more twisted resolute that either of them could not get away from. Academy Award Winner Jamie Foxx (Miami Heat) is laid back cab driver Max Durocher. We see him daydreaming, separating himself from his mundane existence as he hides from the reality that he’s a complete loser who pretends what he’s not and with one fateful night, a complete stranger in his backseat will change his outlook in life…forever!

The better half of another prominent actor, Jada Pinkett Smith (Enemy of the State) breathes life to US Justice Department Prosecutor named Annie Farrell who gets tangled into the crazy cat and mouse chase of Vincent and Max! I used to think that the conversation with the Prosecutor and the Driver was nonsensical; she works for the government and easily shares details however small with a stranger which is not proper and only gave an impression of flirting. She had a few lines here but with an intention to let it linger a bit longer as she runs for her valued life…

Mark Ruffalo is LAPD Detective Ray Fanning withdrawn moreover looked stupid analyzing his crime scene seeing him look so perplexed how he tracks down his perpetrator. I know Mark can do better than this he was great in “What Doesn’t Kill You” and “Shutter Island”.  He’s a cop doing his job plain and simple! To add, fan favourites Javier Bardem (Beautiful) and Jason Statham (Transporter) adds more credible casting credits to the movie’s line-up!

Director Michael Mann (Heat) delivers another nail biting, edge of your seat thriller! His films are great in its simple sense always tackling the same dramatic, gritty ambiance that gives elements to combine into a powerful performance!

The tone dictates real life scenarios that enhance the take in the film’s premise. Michael does instill instinct in his work; he is a perfectionist that gives precedence to the output of a given project. To add, shot in high definition cameras it helps delivers the city of Los Angeles’s backdrop, dark alleys, clubs and city skyline at night that hides more than what we see in general. There is melancholy and hostility in every corner that encompasses the whole dynamic of the two main actors for they serve as our eyes in the small world they live in.

It was an original story and that’s what I miss in the movies we watch nowadays. They are full of visual effects and CGI which shrouds the needed intellectual or even a meaningful performance from the cast. That is why Writers Stuart Beattie and Frank Darabont deserved their awards for the story and screenplay.

Characters were given months to train and understand the role they have to play, it was not something adapted compared to films that came from a book, TV or a remake which gives it something more to work on. Here, all starts from scratch and I believe it’s an even more daunting task and to execute.  Anyone can argue about my impression that even other films will have the same regimen right? True, but these stories came in straight from the actual writers which makes it more interesting to watch.

One thing was coherent is that the Editing team of Jim Miller and Paul Rubell had nominations for both the Oscars and BAFTA Awards. Cinematography Dion Beebe and Paul Cameron even won the award! Intensively detailed and captured city settings that focused on digital cameras that gave the noir ambiance of a crime filled night! James Newton Howard brings life in every scene especially with the best moment of the film making it more explicit to the senses. One of the most creative composers around!

The coyotes in the lonely high ways background signify poetic justice to the story that makes the experience more tangible! Rock sensation Audioslave plays their “Shadow of the Sun” hit that gave me goose bumps just to experience the inevitable climax! As explained by Michael and Tom, this scene shows how these wild animals roam around freely at this time of hour that gives them an opportunity to own the streets, predators that will wreak havoc on anything, anyone who stands in their way which gives connection and makes it full circle to Vincent’s line or work. Well, that’s the way I understood their statements.

Signed, sealed delivered for the entire cast and crew, a remarkable film boasting great talent with great work ethic. Michael Mann is a workaholic; he brought this film from a tireless anticipation of making it perfect for the big screen. Truly remarkable! I know I’ve been lambasting Tom with his egocentric films and portrayals but he’s a great actor nevertheless and this film proves why even more!

Vincent and Max will be tested one final time to step into the light and see who they really are! With this parting lyric “and I can tell you why people die alone…” from Chris Cornell, this film will leave you breathless!

Now You See Me (2013)

“Come in close, closer because the more you think you see the easier it will be to fool you. Because what is seeing? You’re looking but what you are really doing is interpreting, filtering, searching for meaning. My job is to take that most precious of gifts you give me, your attention and use it against you!”

Now You See Me

Summit Entertainment in association with Lionsgate and K/O Paper Products present…

Directed by Louis Leterrier (The Transporter) and together with the help of his faithful assistants Ed Solomon (Men in Black), Boraz Yakin (Remember the Titans) and in his writing debut Edward Ricourt! It’s a fast paced heist action thriller that could have been more elaborate if it wasn’t for the intended pastiched “Ocean’s Eleven” and “Catch Me If You Can” mashed up plots! Louis only has a handful of films under his belt but the French Director has proven enough that he can helm indie films and with “almost there” blockbusters as well. But can he pull off this magic trick? Let’s find out!

THE HORSEMEN COMETH

So, you start the story by introducing your perpetrators to execute these grand schemes and convince the movie going public that magic does have its own attributes if used wisely! Certain individuals having specific “special talents” were drawn into the attention and brought together by an unknown benefactor who has a clandestine agenda we would only know by the end of this film!

The next of the greats, Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) is “The Showman” and self-proclaimed leader of “The Four Horsemen”. A widely acclaimed magician of the masses exuding with confidence and over compulsiveness, J. Daniel Atlas is performing out of this world illusions and tricks to be simply a crowd pleaser or just to woo in the women! Speaking of which, his former “assistant” Isla Fisher (Rise of the Guardians) comes in front and center as “The Escape Artist” now fending for herself while still trying to find out where did they both went wrong? Of course if there is another stallion in the paddock then that would be inconvenient isn’t it?

Enter, the savvy and unaging Woody Harrelson (Seven Psychopaths) is “The Mentalist”, having lost his financial gains he leaned towards to forgetting the outside world while focusing on literally the inside parts of your brain! Woody has a knack in being versatile since he has played plenty of characters that are not two dimensional. His range from action, drama and comedy gives him the right command to bring something new to the table, still play second stringer and contribute by being a team player!  Finally, the fourth “rider” Jack Rider is Dave Franco (Superbad) “The Sleight” of hand, the pickpocket that never got the chance to utilize his skills and put them to good use! Dave’s persona and facade always strikes an uncanny resemblance with his older brother James, acting wise there is still much potential for the guy who was shunned from the spotlight noting the star power of his three comrades. But his role was bigger than I thought considering that he had tons of fight scenes by his own, being taken out of the picture and brought back again just to finish off the masquerade and really show the people what real forces that are at work here!

WOLVES IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING

Old friends but definitely not in this film, Michael Caine (The Prestige) and Morgan Freeman (That was Then… This is Now) respectively performs as crafty Insurance Magnate Arthur Tressler and Thaddeus Bradley an ex-magician turned whistle blower just to gain profiteering from those who are susceptible with the current trends! Although, there was not much given dialogue held by Michael as intended, he was using these “Four Horsemen” to be his next big gig to market his name once again on a grander scale but little does he know that it wasn’t meant to last long as the tables are being turned upside down. On the other hand, Morgan does have better screen time with his still thinly and yet significant spread lines just enough time before the curtains all go “falling” down!

But there was something missing and if we go back from the start, with the pawns have been set in place up to the last minute of the film, we need to ask where did Arthur’s part came to be? How did he meet these tricksters considering that he actually played a major role for being the villain? For Thaddeus part, he has been working all the way to do not what is right but rather what he wants to accomplish by selfish means has been proven to be self-defeating and for karma to rectify things even if it takes eighteen years!

The disillusioned FBI Agent Dylan Rhodes played by Mark Ruffalo (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) tends to be uneasy, reactive and curious! Always asking questions and you will think that a respectful Officer of the Law is just doing his job to catch these thieves and to prove to him that magic is merely meant for “misdirection” then you haven’t see him waive his hand! He is later joined with Interpol Agent Alma Dray played by Melanie Laurent (Inglorious Basterds) a rookie straight from her desk job who means well but can only can cope up with detective work doing more in research than running around with the rest of “two steps behind” police force!

The story’s premise actually deviates from the intended caper as it brings into fruition a long standing grudge and put to justice these so-called prominent businessmen for all the wrongs they have done in the public eye! It also had symbols that cannot be ignored since it has something to do with the “new order” in which the “Eye of Horus” has been flashed around so often that it does give subliminal messages that this may be another “eye opener” or will it just leave us again in the corner before our “Masters” will call for our services once more.  It had a wonderful cast, entertaining and yet unpredictable with its little twist (not the M. Night Shyamalan kind). It got mixed reviews for being muddled that leave too many gaps to reconstitute especially with the viewers and critics perspective.

To support and contend this issue, it was actually a crowd pleaser to begin with while having its 308 million international gross sales it did have mediocre results domestically!  It is expected for the Studios and Producers involved that a sequel is in the works but will it gain the same enthusiasm from the audience…just remember the first rule, be the smartest person in the room or movie theatre for that matter!
