This is a hell of a comedy but makes it enough credence to rationalize even the worst in us or with celebrities that wants to get really high literally!
Columbia Pictures in association with Mandate Pictures and Point Grey Pictures present…
Directed and with written Screenplay by Seth Rogen (50/50) and Evan Goldberg (Superbad), the film was based on their pet project “Jay and Seth versus the Apocalypse” the one and a half teaser movie trailer became an internet sensation as it follows two friends stuck in an apartment trying to make the best out of their fortuitous predicament!
Now, produced as a feature film and set in a modern apocalyptic Los Angeles, long time friends Jay Baruchel (Goon) arrives at the airport where Seth Rogen (Green Hornet) excitedly anticipates their long time reunion. They talk about what happened since last year, being hooked on drugs and disagree on how gluten affects your body and to prove their point, they eat at Carl’s Jr…
So after long hours of playing video games and doing the “Marijuana Mambo” and other adrenaline junk they induce in their system, they got bored and decided to go at the newly constructed “Crib” of Mr. Franco. The party had more star studded celebrities to introduce like “Arrested Development’s” alumni Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim vs The World), “How I Met Your Mother’s” Jason Segal (The Muppets), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Kick-Ass) and pop-singer Rihanna (Battleship)!
So we have rounded the first two main characters and as we go now to the “party to end all parties” James Franco (Flyboys) serves as host and welcomes the two lost souls! Here we also meet the effeminate Jonah Hill (21 Jump Street) who keeps on giving Jay morale support just to compensate his real intentions. While stand up comedian turned actor Craig Robinson (Pineapple Express) gives the brady bunch more funk with his smooth moves with the ladies!
Rude and self-centered as he usually depict in his films, Danny McBride (Your Highness) is the guy that was not invited, so he gate crashed the party and slept in the bath tub waking up and disposes all the water he can find and cooked all the remaining rations in just one get go! He soon finds himself in more trouble being greedy and all, he was soon cast out from the house!
British actress Emma Watson (The Perks of being a Wallflower) gets some of the spotlight, with days living under the drainage, she seeks shelter with the blundering boys only to be given a misinterpreted notion that they have a malicious intent which made her run amok and steal all their remaining water supply!
A film that tackles about these themes can be arranged for both the sane and to the most ludicrous of all ideas like death, demons, exorcism, cannibalism and most of all epiphany! They wanted to delve into those scenarios in spite with all that is happening around them, they will need to understand on how to survive or be able to survive each other!
Speaking of which, we also want to mention the visual effects that brought the film’s catastrophic events come into play from fiery landscapes, sink holes, rapture spot lights, creatures of abomination and of course the big bad himself! Paul Linden acts as the film’s VFX Supervisor as he collaborates with Yanick Wilisky VFX Executive Supervisor for Modus FX as they were was able to provide an awesome synergy of all things that makes these six friends be horrified out of their wits!
The premise was ambitious at best considering that real life friends were able to get together just to be in this movie! Seth tried together with Evan made it possible to give the audience something that was always in their pipeline. So, in order to let these real life people experience a surreal dilemma they come up with the “Apocalypse “ the end of times and as Craig said in the film “it’s time to pay the Piper”!
There were moments that you will be laughing out loud but that’s about it since I’ve always thought that these people are already in the comedy genre and most of them re tenured and have been commercially successful so what else can they bring in order to entice the audience a little bit more? It turned out to be fascinating; they share their life’s experiences while injecting humor in the process. Intended for mature audiences, too much cursing, sexual content, alcohol and drug use were manifested!
Although it was entertaining, it never passes up to my expectations since they have a very different realization on what Heaven supposed to be where you can still curse, party in bikinis do whatever you want! At least it wouldn’t hurt to have some music to bring “back” vibes down in memory lane!
